How I Photograph Families With Care on Your Wedding Day

When your most important people become my most important people.

Families carry so much into a wedding day — history, emotion, nerves, pride, love. I’ve learned that looking after them is one of the quietest, most important parts of my job.

Many couples tell me they want their families to feel comfortable.
Older relatives who tire quickly.
Parents who aren’t used to cameras.
People recovering from illness.
Blended families who need space.
Anyone who simply doesn’t like being photographed.

None of this is unusual.
It’s human.
And it shapes the way I work.

My approach is calm, considerate and centred around real people feeling at ease.

Why Some Family Members Might Feel Uncomfortable

Every family carries a mix of emotion, personality and history into a wedding day. It’s part of what makes the day meaningful. Some people feel shy, some are dealing with illness or recovery, some struggle with the pace of the day, and some simply don’t enjoy being photographed. There might be a guest living with dementia, a sibling who avoids the camera, or a dynamic that needs gentleness. None of this is unusual. It’s just real life, and it asks for awareness and a thoughtful approach.

Reading the Room

When I walk into a room with parents or grandparents, I don’t start with my camera.
I say hello.
I learn names.
I get a sense of the space and who might need a slower pace.

Some people settle in quickly.
Some don’t.
That’s normal.
Creating comfort at the start makes everything that follows easier.

Helping Parents Feel at Ease

Parents are rarely part of the pre-wedding conversations, so they often don’t know what to expect.

I let them know:

  • most of the day unfolds naturally
  • nothing will be staged
  • they won’t be asked to repeat anything

It’s usually all they need — a clear, calm presence and someone who won’t take over their moment.

Photographing Older or Less Mobile Relatives

If someone finds moving around difficult, I adjust everything around them.

If group photos are far away, I bring the couple to them instead.
These moments often end up being some of the most tender — a small pocket of connection away from the busyness.

I pay attention to comfort: a seat, shade, warmth, quiet.
The goal is simple: dignity, ease, and time.

Working With Camera-Shy Family Members

There’s always someone who’s very aware of the camera. The best approach is patience and connection.

I take my time.
I give space.
If someone notices me, I put the camera down and speak to them.
Acknowledgement often settles nerves far more than pretending I’m invisible.

Trust is always more important than a quick photo.

Keeping Group Photos Easy

Group photos can easily overwhelm families, so I keep them simple and steady.

We prioritise older relatives.
We stick to combinations that genuinely matter.
We plan ahead for sensitive dynamics.
We move through them with clarity and care.

Parents often tell me afterwards how calm it all felt — and honestly, that’s the aim.

Small Moments That Matter

Every wedding teaches me something new.

A parent who cried quietly in the next room and felt embarrassed — until a gentle word changed everything.
A grandparent who needed shade and a moment to breathe.
A family navigating a difficult relationship with grace.

These moments shape the way I show up.

The Heart of My Approach

Your families are a real part of your story, and their comfort shapes the way your day feels. The way they move through the wedding becomes part of your memory.

I photograph families with care, patience and respect. I adapt to who they are, keep things simple, and always prioritise people over pictures. When people feel at ease, the photographs follow naturally.

If this approach feels right for your day, you’re welcome to get in touch.
I’d love to hear about the people who matter most to you.
